The background was done with Flipbook - it's the best drawing tool I've found for the iPhone, even ignoring the animation capabilities.
Main tip is to use full zoom nearly all the time. Subtle(ish) shading can be done by leaving a load of dots on the border between one colour and the next. This isn't time consuming. Just zoom in and keeping stabbing the screen till the number of dots looks right.

but i don't mind if people refuse to believe it was done in flipbook - i view that as praise.
